Reapian Medical founders have an extensive partnership history with the University of Stellenbosch Biochemistry Department. The Department of Biochemistry has several active research groups, each making a significant contribution to biochemistry and science as a whole. Their research laboratories house state-of-the-art research instrumentation and facilities and are managed by highly trained technical staff, all essential for maintaining a high standard in biochemical research. The Department is also hosting a Research Chair in Mechanistic Modelling of Health and Epidemiology as part of the South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI). Reapian envisages continuing its future operations in a close relationship with this highly accredited institution.
BIOCHEMISTRY
What is biochemistry?
Biochemistry is the application of chemistry to the study of biological processes at the cellular and molecular levels. It emerged as a distinct discipline around the beginning of the 20th century when scientists combined chemistry, physiology, and biology to investigate the chemistry of living systems. It is the branch of science concerned with the chemical and Physico-chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms. With an assessment of blood and urine as part of a multi-compartment assessment (e.g. blood test), Reapian can advise and assist with an effective supplement program and recommend the most suitable medical insurance plan, to help prevent and manage current and future disease.
NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMISTRY
An Applied Scientific Study
Nutritional biochemistry is an applied scientific study, which is based on biology and chemistry, put together with the science of nutrition. Through the understanding of the metabolism of living organisms and chemical analysis at the molecular level, they were able to discover the nutritionally beneficial materials from which functional foods are derived alongside their chemical application and development. Specifically, they examined scientific research publications where mechanisms through genetic cell-line experiments were used and also apply biochemical analysis where animal and human research were utilized in order to analyze the components and effects of newly found material.
